The best time of year to visit San Diego if you’re looking to lay out on the beach or run around in a sun-dress is May-September. While the Fall/Winter months are still warm in comparison to most of the US, a sweater, scarf, and hot mug of tea are often still necessary.
TRANSPORTATION
San Diego has wonderful public transportation, from the trolley to the coaster that runs all the way up to Oceanside to the public bus. Uber and Lyft are always accessible 24/7. You can also rent bikes to cruise all over individual beach towns.
THE NEIGHBORHOODS
Pacific Beach
Has a mix of upscale and casual restaurants and hotels, and a relaxed beach vibe. One of the best spots to take surf lessons is at Tourmaline, where the waves stay pretty mild (usually about 2-3’)
The Fish Shop for a more casual environment. Choose from a range of fresh, local fish (I suggest the blackened red snapper)!
Second Nature offers many organic vegetarian/gluten-free options. Their coconut Thai curry is a must-try.
The Fishery’s menu changes with the seasons and is more upscale. The Bar manager states, “Balance is our favorite ingredient behind the bar. We start with one seasonal ingredient and build a cocktail around it.” Stop in for a summery cocktail and their oysters on the half shell.
La Jolla
A more high-end and offers (in my opinion) some of the most idyllic coastal scenes in San Diego! Check out the tide pools and discover all kinds of sea life! Go down to La Jolla Cove to say hello to the dozens of sea lions that reside there.
Parakeet Cafe is great for a late lunch/early dinner if you feel like a luscious salad or organic bowl. If you go for brunch, don’t leave without trying their gluten free cacao waffle!
Enjoy dinner on an open-air terrace at George’s at the Cove. This place won the “‘Best of the Best’ Fancy Restaurant Category” and “Beef Tartare” featured in ‘103 Dishes You Should Absolutely Positively Eat Before You Die,’” both in San Diego Magazine.
Trilogy Sanctuary is a go-to spot if you want to sip on some tea or kombucha and enjoy a vegan/gluten-free meal on a rooftop overlooking La Jolla. Their desserts (especially the “Transcendent” Brownie) are so rich you could drown.
Downtown/Little Italy
For a more urban, fast-paced vibe farther away from the ocean.
King and Queen Cantina brings Latin flavor to San Diego. Their Birria tacos are amongst the most popular.
New hotspot Coco Maya offers an unforgettable lobster ravioli with sauteed oyster mushrooms, bechamel truffle sauce, and thyme.
Garage Kitchen and Bar offers live music every Friday and Saturday from 6-9. Order their Californication cocktail (tequila, watermelon liqueur, triple sec, mango juice, and lime juice) and hit the dance floor!
Coronado
An island whose beaches are consistently voted best in the U.S. by Dr. Beach.
Encinitas
About 30 minutes north of Downtown San Diego and offers a more peaceful setting. Here you’ll find crystal shops, meditation gardens, and Swami’s Beach, where Paramahansa Yogananda wrote much of “Autobiography of a Yogi.”
Ocean Beach
Also known as “Hippie Beach”, is probably the most laid-back of all the neighborhoods. You’ll find many surfers living out of their vans; people selling handmade jewelry on the sidewalk; drum circles by the beach.
OTHER ACTIVITIES
Bonfires Brought to you! Free Delivery of All Fire Pit Rentals To Mission Beach and La Jolla Shores from Beach and Bay Bonfires. Enjoy a night under the stars without the hassle.
